Each year, Cordisco & Saile chooses one individual who is a leukemia survivor or whose life has been affected by an immediate family member having leukemia to receive a $1,500 scholarship to the school of their choice.
This cause is close to the hearts of the team at Cordisco & Saile. Attorney, Michael Saile’s son suffered from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), so he knows firsthand the hardships faced by those battling leukemia and their loved ones. Attorney Saile said, “We hope this scholarship relieves some financial burden for a student who has already sacrificed so much in their fight against this disease.”
This year, we are pleased to announce our winner, Annette Lysan. Annette is currently a student at Boston University’s School of Social Work pursuing her Master of Social Work degree. She is a leukemia survivor who was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) at the age of 13 months. Related of her condition, Annette underwent many surgeries and procedures as a child and is familiar with the difficulties and emotional challenges unique to childhood illness. Today she is a 22-year childhood cancer survivor.
Annette’s hope is to work as a social worker with children and families in a hospital setting to support them as they face the obstacles of hospitalization and sickness. Inspired by the social workers who worked with her in her childhood, she plans to use her familiarity with facing a life-threatening illness to help children and their families cope with the physical and emotional challenges that they encounter during hospitalization and medical issues. She believes her ability to understand and empathize with their unique circumstances will help her to serve families with “a professional level of faith, love, and helpfulness” similar to what she experienced as a child.
We wish Annette the best of luck in her future endeavors and know she will make a difference in the lives of many. Congratulations, Annette!
