An alleged drag race claimed the life of a woman and left two others injured after a car ran off the road and exploded into flames. The Bensalem car accident took place at approximately 10:30 PM on Monday, September 3, 2012, along US 1.
According to officials, two vehicles were allegedly racing along US 1 when one of the vehicles, a 2000 Volvo, ran off the road near the Street Road Exit and slammed into the business sign of a Driver’s Choice. The force of the impact caused the car to roll several times before it burst into flames.
Reports indicate that there were three people, a man and two women, in the vehicle at the time of the collision. The male driver and one of the female passengers were ejected from the Volvo. The second woman was pinned in the back of the car.
“We saw the car flip over, burst into flames,” said one witness.
Unfortunately, the pinned female lost her life due to injuries sustained in the accident. Rescue crews transported the two survivors to Aria Torresdale Hospital where they were treated for unspecified injuries. Their conditions were not immediately made known.
The fatal Bensalem car accident remains under investigation by local officials. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor. According to witnesses, the Volvo may have been drag racing another vehicle.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to everyone affected by this tragedy. We wish both surviving victims a speedy recovery.
