Video Reminds Us All to Drive Safely This Holiday Season

Drunk drivers, distracted motorists, greater numbers of pedestrians, and poor visibility: all of these factors combine to increase a motorist’s risk of suffering injuries in an accident over the holiday season.

Watch this video that illustrates how people go from drinking with friends and having a good time to making poor choices that affects themselves, their loved ones, and other innocent people. The video is a creation of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) from Victoria, Australia. It starts with clips of people drinking with friends, dancing, etc. It then starts to show people swerving in their vehicles and police stopping drunk drivers. It then shows gruesome traffic accidents and loved ones devastated by the accidents.

Watch this video and encourage loved ones and friends to watch it too. Negligent driving like driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, texting while driving, speeding and other forms of reckless behavior continue to contribute to accidents, all while the vehicles themselves are manufactured with more safety features.

Tips for Spotting a Negligent or Reckless Motorist

While we can all make our own responsible choices, we can’t control the actions of other motorists. Look out for motorists who may be impaired or distracted over the holidays.

Below are some signs that a motorist might be impaired or distracted.

  • Weaving between lanes
  • Driving too fast
  • Driving too slow
  • Tailgating
  • Running red lights

If you spot a motorist like this, take action. Distance yourself from the driver, find a safe spot to pull over, and call 911 to report a possibly intoxicated or otherwise impaired driver. Inform the dispatcher of the driver’s location (which road and in which direction he is traveling) as well as a brief description of the vehicle.

If you can, get the license plate number, but again, try to distance yourself from the motorist as soon as you can. Also, look out for drivers who are driving while distracted. These motorists may find it difficult to maintain lanes, may run red lights or brake late, or you may see them staring down at a phone in their hand.
