“Worst” Winter Driving Conditions, According to Drivers, Truckers

· Dec 1, 2020 ·

As we sneak past Thanksgiving Weekend and into December, we know that in the northeast it’s time to start preparing for a shift in weather.

More cold, more, ice, more snow – and with that tougher road conditions.

According to winter driving accident statistics, traffic accidents on snowy, slushy, or icy roads account for 24% of weather-related traffic accidents. Lets face it – driving in winter can be a nightmare.

In a recent survey of 500 drivers, Insurance.com found that nearly three-quarters of motorists said driving in winter is their least favorite season to drive. Winter driving makes you think immediately of snowy conditions, but the survey found the biggest issue, was ice.

Top five worst things about driving in winter (according to insurance.com survey):

  • Driving on ice — 37%
  • Anxiety over driving in snowy, icy conditions — 13%
  • Driving in snow — 9%
  • Poor visibility because of snow or sleet — 8%
  • Driving in the dark more often — 8%

According to some of the busiest and most consistent drivers – truckers – freezing rain is the most challenging condition.  In a recent survey, 63% of truckers were most concerned about freezing rain, followed by heavy snowfall (19%).

While we can’t control the weather or its dangers, we should do all we can to prevent accidents.  In the same insurance.com survey, drivers answered with how they react to being safer in the winter.

Here are the three most common ways drivers change the way they drive in winter:

  • Drive slower — 84%
  • Only take major roads/routes — 40%
  • Don’t drive unless it’s clear — 23%

Although you may take extra steps to protect yourself, you can’t control the actions of others.

If you or a loved one is injured in a weather-related accident, call Cordisco & Saile for a free consultation to learn your rights, at 215-642-2335.
