Wrist Injuries & Accidents

In any auto accident in the Bucks County area, there is a good chance that someone involved will be left with a personal injury. One of the most common results of Pennsylvania auto accidents is wrist injuries. Why are the wrists so commonly injured, and what should you do if you sustain a wrist injury? Bucks County personal injury lawyer, Michael L. Saile Jr., shares his knowledge to answer your questions concerning wrist injuries.

The following are some of the most common wrist injuries that occur as the result of an auto accident:

Distal Radius Fractures: Also known as Colles fractures, distal radius fractures affect the distal end of the radius bone, which is the bone in your forearm which connects your wrist and elbow. If it becomes rigid, as often happens in auto accidents in the Philadelphia area, any extreme force is likely to cause a fracture. This type of wrist injury will result in pain, wrist deformity, swelling and possible bruising.

Scaphoid Fractures: A scaphoid fracture is almost always the result of extreme force or trauma, since the scaphoid bone is one of the strongest in your body. The scaphoid bone is located on the thumb side of the wrist and can be fractured in an auto accident. Medical attention is extremely necessary in this type of fracture, as it can result in a disruption of blood flow to the wrist and to the injury.

Hamate Hook Fracture: A hamate hook fracture is most commonly known as a sports injury, but it is also often the result of auto accidents. This type of wrist injury may be difficult to detect and it may be necessary to utilize diagnostic tests to diagnose a hamate hook injury.

If you have sustained a wrist injury in a Bucks County accident, it is important to go to the hospital as soon as possible following the accident. You may not immediately feel wrist pain following the accident, but if you develop pain and your wrist begins to swell in the days following the accident, it is important to make an appointment with your family doctor to receive treatment, a diagnosis, and a recommended plan of action.
