Safety for our children is a top priority for every family in Philadelphia. On February 17, 2026, the Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) officially launched a new school zone speed camera enforcement pilot program across five high-priority locations in the city. This initiative follows the success of automated enforcement on Roosevelt Boulevard, which saw a staggering 95% reduction in speeding violations.

While these cameras are a vital step toward safer streets, traffic accidents involving pedestrians and schoolchildren remain a tragic reality in our region. As a leading Philadelphia car accident firm, we are dedicated to helping those injured by negligent drivers navigate the legal system and find justice.

Why This Matters for Philadelphians

Between 2019 and 2023, the five zones selected for this pilot program recorded a total of 10 fatal or serious-injury crashes and 25 pedestrian crashes. In a city where nearly four children are struck by vehicles every week, these statistics are more than just numbers—they represent families whose lives have been forever changed.

Speeding is the leading cause of traffic incidents in Pennsylvania, contributing to over 23,000 crashes annually. By enforcing a strict 15 mph limit when school flashers are active, the PPA aims to deter dangerous driving behaviors before they result in a life-altering brain injury or a tragic loss.

PPA Camera Locations and Enforcement

The program begins with a 60-day warning period starting February 17, 2026. During this time, violators will receive written warnings. However, starting April 20, 2026, full enforcement begins, and drivers caught traveling 11 mph or more over the limit will face fines ranging from $100 to $150. The five initial locations include:
  1. John B. Stetson Middle School: E. Allegheny Ave. (A to B Streets)
  2. KIPP North Philadelphia Charter School: N. 16th St. (Cumberland to Huntingdon)
  3. Widener Memorial School: W. Olney Ave. (N. Broad to N. 16th)
  4. High School of the Future: W. Girard Ave. (N. 39th to N. 40th)
  5. William L. Sayre High School: Walnut St. (S. 58th to S. 59th)
Cameras will only be active during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal hours when school zone flashers are on.

Expert Perspectives on Public Safety

“Our school zone speed camera program is about public safety and changing dangerous driving behavior,” stated PPA Executive Director Rich Lazer. City officials emphasize that this is a critical component of the “Vision Zero” program, which aims to eliminate all traffic-related fatalities in Philadelphia.

At Cordisco & Saile, we see the aftermath of these “avoidable” accidents every day. Whether it is a truck accident on a busy corridor or a pedestrian struck in a crosswalk, the physical and emotional toll is immense. We support initiatives that hold drivers accountable and protect the most vulnerable members of our community.

Implications for Philadelphia Injury Victims

While automated cameras can reduce speeding, they cannot prevent every accident. If you or a loved one is injured in a school zone or any Philadelphia roadway, the legal implications are complex. Pennsylvania law allows victims to seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering, but insurance companies often fight to minimize these claims.

This is why having an experienced personal injury lawyer in Philadelphia is essential. A dedicated legal team can help identify evidence of negligence—such as a driver’s history of speeding in these newly monitored zones—to build a strong case for the compensation you deserve.

We Fight Because You Deserve Someone on Your Side

The expansion of speed cameras to Philadelphia school zones is a welcome change for community safety. However, if the worst happens and you are involved in a collision, you don’t have to face the aftermath alone.

At Cordisco & Saile, our motto is “People Come First.” We have won over $100 million for our clients because we never stop fighting for the justice they deserve. If you have been injured, give yourself a fighting chance.
