Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit

Transvaginal surgical mesh consists of mesh or a screen implanted in the pelvic or vaginal region to support soft tissue that is weak or damaged. Doctors may use it to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) or stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Unfortunately, some women may suffer complications from these devices, which can lead to serious injuries and expenses.

If you suffered injuries from a transvaginal mesh product, you might qualify to file a claim for compensation. To determine whether you are eligible for compensation, call the transvaginal mesh lawyers from Cordisco & Saile LLC at 215-642-2335. You also can fill out our contact form to set up a consultation to review your case.

Transvaginal Surgical Mesh

Surgical mesh products are class II devices. As noted, doctors may use them to treat POP or SUI. A woman who suffers from stress-related urinary incontinence may experience an involuntary release of urine during routine activities like laughing or sneezing. In a pelvic organ prolapse, the pelvic organs become stretched or weakened, causing them to protrude. Women with POP may experience pressure from the uterus, bladder or rectum pressing on the vaginal area.

So many women see transvaginal mesh as a means of escaping what they perceive as troubling or embarrassing conditions. The doctor inserts surgical mesh through an incision. The mesh then supports pelvic tissue that is weak or damaged, helping to relieve POP and SUI. Unfortunately, some women experience complications associated with these products.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is aware of several reports of injuries and even deaths associated with the use of these products. The FDA searched the Manufacturer and User Device Experience database searching for reports of adverse events associated with these products. It found 3,979 reports involving injuries, fatalities and product malfunctions between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2010.

Complications Associated with Surgical Mesh

Below are the most frequently reported complications the FDA received from the use of surgical mesh between 2008 and 2010.

  • Mesh erosion
  • Pain (such as painful intercourse)
  • Infection
  • Urinary problems
  • Bleeding
  • Organ perforation
  • Recurrent prolapse
  • Neuromuscular problems
  • Vaginal scarring and shrinking
  • Emotional problems

Some women require additional surgery to remove surgical mesh. The FDA does not identify any one particular brand of surgical mesh as more dangerous than others.

What should I do if I suffered injuries from surgical mesh implantation?

Several women have filed lawsuits seeking compensation from manufacturers of transvaginal surgical mesh products. If you underwent a transvaginal surgical mesh implantation procedure and suffered any of the associated side effects, talk to your doctor about your symptoms. Then discuss your legal options with transvaginal mesh attorneys from Cordisco & Saile LLC.

If you can prove that the manufacturer is liable for your injuries because its product was unsafe, you may be able to recover damages. In some cases, doctors may be liable for failing to treat complications of the transvaginal mesh or for errors made when inserting the device.

Below are some of the damages that patients might recover in a product liability or medical malpractice case.

  • Medical expenses
  • Lost income
  • Pain and suffering
  • Disability
  • Emotional trauma

Each case is different, so set up your consultation to review the specifics of your case. Your lawyer can help decide if you qualify to bring a lawsuit and the types of damages you may recover.
